Overview
Akroma’s Memorial is a 7-mana artifact that supercharges your army. Creatures you control gain flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, haste, and protection from black and from red. In one card you get evasion, offense, defense, and immediate impact, often turning a modest board into lethal.
How it plays
Memorial is best when you already have bodies on the table or a token engine ready to flood the board. Haste lets you convert new creatures into damage the turn they arrive; vigilance preserves defense after attacking; trample pushes through stalls; protection blanks a swath of removal and combat. Because it doesn’t buff toughness intrinsically, be mindful of exile and colorless sweepers, but the keyword suite makes normal combat irrelevant.
Decks & synergies
- Go-wide/tokens: Turn a pile of 1/1s into an unstoppable, hasty air force that also blocks.
- Big-mana ramp: With plentiful mana, Memorial functions as an anthem-plus-haste enabler for colossal creatures.
- Artifact & cheat effects: Urza-style decks or Tinker/War of Invention shells can find and deploy it ahead of schedule.
- Commanders that scale with combat: Anything that wants multiple attackers or on-hit triggers benefits enormously from haste and evasion.
Sequencing & tips
Play Memorial on turns where you will immediately attack—don’t pass and give opponents time to remove it. If you suspect artifact hate, bait interaction first or hold up protection. The protections from black and red matter in combat and against many removal suites; use them to create unfavorable blocks and blank targeted spells.
Formats
A classic closer for Commander that occasionally appears in artifact-centric cubes. Heavy on mana but light on setup—perfect for decks that already build wide.
