Overview
Ancient Bronze Dragon is a 7/7 flyer that snowballs your board with counters. When it deals combat damage to a player, roll a d20; you put that many +1/+1 counters on each of up to two target creatures. One hit can turn a modest board into lethal threats.
How it plays
The dragon rewards decks that already have bodies in play. You aim to connect once, spread counters to two key threats, and turn subsequent combats into routs. The counters are permanent, so even if the dragon dies afterwards, your army remains enormous. Trample and evasion effects multiply the payoff; double strike sends counter counts into the stratosphere. Protection and timing are everything—pick your spot to attack when shields are up or removal is taxed.
Decks & synergies
- +1/+1 Counters: Hardened Scales, Conclave Mentor, and The Ozolith increase counters or conserve them through removal.
- Go-wide tokens: Distribute counters onto evasive or trampling bodies; follow with overrun effects for the clean finish.
- Double strike & trample: Embercleave, Halvar/Godsend, or green overrun effects ensure damage connects and counters keep piling up.
- Commander beatdown: Loves Gruul/Selesnya shells that curve into huge combats and protect key threats.
Sequencing & tips
Identify your two best recipients early—ideally evasive or resilient creatures. After the first big roll, pressure life totals immediately before a sweeper resets the board. If you suspect removal, hold up protection to guarantee the combat connection that matters.
