Overview
Ancient Gold Dragon turns combat into an aerial army. When it deals combat damage to a player, roll a d20 and create that many 1/1 Faerie Dragon creature tokens with flying. One connection can overwhelm the skies and turbocharge token payoffs.
How it plays
The plan is to connect, explode onto the board with evasive tokens, then convert them into damage, cards, or mana. Token doublers push the output from strong to absurd. Because the roll happens on combat damage, haste or protection effects are critical to getting the first hit. After that, your swarm protects the dragon and makes subsequent attacks lethal.
Decks & synergies
- Token doublers: Anointed Procession, Mondrak, and Doubling Season double or quadruple the flock.
- Damage & anthem payoffs: Purphoros, God of the Forge, Impact Tremors, and Cathars’ Crusade convert tokens into immediate board impact.
- Card advantage & sac outlets: Skullclamp, Ashnod’s Altar, Divine Visitation (upgrade to 4/4 Angels) turn quantity into quality.
- Extra combats/haste: Adriana/Aurelia effects or simple boots ensure repeated connections.
Sequencing & tips
Lead with haste or protection, then slam the dragon when you can attack immediately. If you have token payoffs in hand, prioritize the lines that create the largest burst in a single turn to dodge sorcery-speed sweepers. Your tokens have flying—use them to pressure planeswalkers and spread damage intelligently.
Formats
Tailor-made for Commander token and go-wide strategies, with occasional appearances in high-power cubes. A crowd-pleaser that ends games decisively.
